Feminist Frequency explores how women are depicted in popular media. Aiming to break down the stereotypes that are associated with females in pop culture she also seeks to bring attention to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet world. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in political and social thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has spoken at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues and feminist thought. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. This ambitious woman planned to create an online series that examined the role of gender in games but was the target of an online campaign to harass her. She was not deterred by the harassment, the fact is that it only bolstered her desire to become feminist and media critic. Her notable contributions to the feminist field were recognized by a variety of awards. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. The nonprofit explores the portrayals of women in contemporary pop culture.
